How to Troubleshoot an Iffy Wi-Fi Connection

How to Troubleshoot an Iffy Wi-Fi Connection

Your business depends on its wireless connectivity, but you might notice that there are various factors that can influence how well your devices can connect to your wireless networks. We’ve put together a shortlist of things that can get in the way of your Wi-Fi connection and what you can do to avoid them.

Confirm the Problem Is Your Wireless

Before you jump to conclusions, make sure that the speed of your wireless network is actually the problem here. Sometimes your Internet service provider might be suffering from issues on their end, so to check, conduct a speed test on a wired network, then try conducting one on your wireless connection to see how the speeds compare.

Update Your Wi-Fi Routers and Modems

Wireless routers and modems run software, too, not unlike the software your desktop, laptop, and smartphone devices do. Take a moment to update any drivers or firmware installed on your wireless network technology and see if this resolves your problems.

Adjust Your Router Placement

If you don’t have your router placed in an optimal location, you might find that your signal is simply not reaching where it needs to. Things like walls, appliances, and other objects could cause obstructions for your signal. Be sure to place your router in a central location so it can transmit equally to your entire office.

Too Much Traffic on Your Networks

If you have too many devices on your network, naturally the bandwidth will be stretched too thin. If your router has multiple bands on it, you can change which devices are using which network to optimize for speed. Devices that use more data should be on the 5.4 gHz connection while Internet of Things and other connected devices don’t necessarily need the speed or consistency provided by these types of networks. Furthermore, certain devices might be better off with a wired connection, so moving them to one can help to clear up the wireless networks for devices that need it most.

Update Your Hardware

Finally, if all else fails, you can consider updating your hardware by replacing the modem or router completely. If you have been using the same router for years, then it’s natural that it might grow outdated and require a replacement.
